THE MERCY OF GOD

Ev. Brilianti Inglie

Transcript

The story of Jonah is not just about a man and a big fish, but about God's mercy that still opens the door of His grace for us all. He still gives everyone an opportunity to repent. Behind the story we've often heard since Sunday school, there's a very profound message: God never stops calling humanity to return to Him.

True repentance means ceasing to hide, honestly admitting our faults, and abandoning the things that distance us from God. It's not merely a feeling of regret, but a decision to change and return to God's way.

The illustration of Michael Packard, who was only inside the mouth of a whale for about 30 seconds yet nearly died—this real-life story of Michael Packard—makes us realize just how extraordinary the account of Jonah is, having spent three days and three nights inside a great fish.

Today, perhaps without realizing it, we too can “run away” like Jonah. We might hide behind busyness, get lost in social media, be entangled in wrong relationships, or harbor bitterness and fear. Even hidden sins can draw us away from God. But the good news is, God, who is love, continues to call us back.

The story of Jonah is a picture of Jesus: Jonah “came out” after three days, and Jesus rose on the third day to bring salvation to the world.

The sign of Jonah has already been given, as it is written in Matthew 16:4. Jesus is the greater sign of Jonah. He has died, His blood has been shed, and He has risen. Therefore, what we need now is no longer a sign, but a heart willing to respond to God's call.

The city of Nineveh stands as clear proof of God's mercy. When they repented in Jonah's time, God withheld His wrath. However, about 110 years later, in the time of Nahum, they returned to wickedness and ultimately faced destruction. From this, we learn that the door of God's mercy is indeed open, but not forever.

As long as we are still alive, still breathing, and can still hear God's Word, it is proof that the door of God's mercy is still open. Don't delay. Don't harden your heart. Enter into God's mercy today, while the opportunity still exists.

We are reminded that God is patient and full of love, but He is also holy and just. He loves, but He will also judge. The mercy that God gives is not an excuse to continue living in sin, but an invitation for us to repent immediately.

May the Lord Jesus Bless You
