Kindness is one of the fruits of the Spirit that should be clearly visible in the life of every believer. In Greek, the word chrēstotēs (χρηστότης) is used, which describes goodness and kindness that is beneficial to others, done with a gentle heart and without expecting anything in return. Ephesians 2:7 shows that we first experience this kindness through God's grace, freely given to us in Christ Jesus. Because we have received the Lord's kindness, we are also called to show kindness to others.
However, 2 Timothy 3:1-5 describes that in the last days, human character will increasingly deviate from God's character. People will love themselves, become lovers of money, boastful, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, without self-control, brutal, treacherous, and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. Outwardly, they may still perform religious duties, but they lack the power that should produce character change.
There are four "un" attitudes that we need to be aware of.
First, unthankful. The world and social media often make us compare our lives with others, making it easy to complain. Yet there are many simple things for which we should be grateful: still being able to see the sun, enjoy food, health, family, and the beauty of God's creation. Simple things can become very precious when one day we no longer have them.
Second, unholy. Someone can still worship but at the same time allow sin to remain in their life. If continuously left unchecked, the conscience becomes increasingly insensitive, and godliness fades. Romans 11:22 reminds us to consider both the kindness and the severity of God. The life of a believer must always be directed toward the truth of God's word.
Third, unloving. True love is not given because someone deserves it or because we expect something in return. Like the good Samaritan, we are called to love and help even when there is no benefit to ourselves.
Fourth, unforgiving. Romans 12:19-21 teaches us not to repay evil with evil. Vengeance belongs to the Lord. Instead, believers are called to overcome evil with good. This is where kindness becomes real.
Proverbs 21:21 says that whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor. Psalm 23:6 also says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”
The kindness that “follows” us can be described like a footprint of life. Every help, love, forgiveness, and kindness we do leaves a mark. Therefore, wherever we go, may others see the footprint of God's kindness through our lives. Until one day we meet the Lord, our lives will be a testimony that we not only worship Him but also live in His character.
