TRUE WORSHIPPERS

Ps. Agus Gunawan

Transcript

Praise and worship are the very breath of our faith. But what exactly constitutes "true worship"? In John 4:23-24, the Lord Jesus affirms that the Father seeks worshippers who worship Him in spirit and truth. This is not merely a spiritual activity, but a calling for life itself. There are three main pillars that define a true worshipper.

1. Worshipping in Spirit. Humans consist of body, soul, and spirit. The body responds to physical comfort, the soul is influenced by emotions and circumstances, but the spirit is the deepest core connected to God.

Worship at the bodily level depends on atmosphere, music, location, and comfort. When the environment is favorable, we find it easy to praise. However, when conditions are not ideal, our enthusiasm wanes.

Worship at the soul level is deeper, but still dependent on feelings. When life goes well, we easily give thanks. But when troubles arise, our praise often falters.

In contrast, worship in spirit does not depend on circumstances. Paul and Silas are clear examples. Amidst their suffering, they continued to pray and praise the Lord. From that worship, a great miracle occurred: prison doors opened and souls were won. This demonstrates that worship in spirit releases the tangible power of God.

2. Worshipping in Truth. A Life Aligned with the Word. Worship cannot be separated from daily life. God always seeks worshippers who live in truth – there is harmony between what is sung and what is lived. It means little if someone worships with great emotion but lives a life full of compromise. God sees the heart and integrity. Psalm 22:4 states that God inhabits the praises of His people—meaning His presence is real amidst praise that originates from a righteous life.

Just as a dove seeks a place to rest, so too the Holy Spirit seeks a pure heart. If our lives are full of sin and compromise, we hinder His work. True worship springs from a heart filled with the Word and living in obedience.

3. Be Humble and Obedient to Our Leaders True worship is always God-centered, not man-centered. It is an act of humbling ourselves and exalting Him.

Praise is not a stage to display our abilities, but an an altar to offer our hearts. When the focus shifts to ourselves, the essence of worship is lost.

Miriam's story serves as a warning. She once led the people in praising God, but then succumbed to pride and faced its consequences. This shows that no gift, no matter how great, can replace humility.

A true worshipper possesses a servant's heart, not seeking recognition, not easily offended, but only desiring God to be glorified.

The Lord Jesus bless you.
