JOY IN THE MIDST OF THE STORM

Ps. Albert Tanoni

Transcript

The joy of believers should not depend on external circumstances. The world can change, the economy can be unstable, prices can rise, work can be stressful, and life can face many storms. But the Word of God reminds us that in the Lord, we can still have joy. Not because all problems disappear, but because we know our source of strength is God.

1. Remembering and noting God's goodness. One reason joy is lost is when we forget God's goodness. Saul is a clear example. He had been blessed by God with many things: he came from a respected family, was handsome, became king over Israel, and God also gave him many victories. But when David was praised by the people, Saul's heart began to envy.

Saul's problem was not that God had blessed him less, but that he stopped seeing God's blessings in his life. He focused more on the praise David received than on remembering all the goodness of God he had experienced. From this, we learn that envy can steal joy. Therefore, we need to learn to remember and record God's goodness, so that our hearts are not easily overcome by complaints, comparisons, and jealousy.

2. True joy is born from an encounter with Christ. True joy does not come from money, position, or comfortable circumstances. Zacchaeus was a rich man and held a position, but his life changed when he met Jesus. When Jesus called his name and wanted to come to his house, Zacchaeus received Jesus with joy.

Likewise with the Magi. They had wealth and brought expensive offerings, but their greatest joy occurred when they saw the sign that led them to Jesus. Even the shepherds, though simple and not of high standing, returned praising and glorifying God after seeing what the Lord had revealed to them. This shows that no matter who we are, true joy is found only in an encounter with Christ.

3. The house of the Lord is where joy is restored. David said, 'I rejoiced when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord."' The house of the Lord is not just a place where we are physically present, but a place where our hearts are re-directed to God.

Sometimes our joy weakens because we stare at problems for too long. But when we come to the Lord, our hearts are refreshed again. We are reminded that God remains faithful, remains good, and remains with us throughout our lives.

4. The joy of the Lord gives strength in the midst of the storm. Psalm 84 reminds us that those whose strength is in the Lord will go from strength to strength. Even when passing through the Valley of Baca, which is a place of tears and difficulties, God is able to transform it into a spring.

Life's storms do not always stop immediately, but God gives us strength to go through them. Tears do not always disappear instantly, but God is able to turn them into testimonies. Do not let circumstances steal our joy. Remember God's goodness, meet with Christ, long for the house of the Lord, and believe that the joy from God is our strength. Amen.
