Kanaf is a simple word, but it has a deep meaning. In Hebrew, kanaf can mean the hem of a garment, but it can also mean a wing. These two meanings help us understand the story of the woman who suffered from bleeding for twelve years in Mark 5:25-34.
This woman was not just experiencing an ordinary illness. For twelve years, her body was weakened by incessant bleeding. She had repeatedly sought treatment from various physicians, even spending all she had, but to no avail. Her condition only worsened. The disease not only ravaged her body but also destroyed her finances, her hope, and her life.
Furthermore, according to the Law, a person experiencing bleeding was considered unclean. She was not free to associate with others. She could not be touched and could not touch. For twelve years, she lived in solitude, shame, rejection, and isolation. But in the midst of that dark situation, she heard about Jesus. Her almost extinguished hope began to flicker again.
She made a brave decision. Although her body was weak and her status as an unclean person put her at risk of rejection, she still approached Jesus from behind and touched the hem of His garment. She said to herself, “If I only touch His cloak, I will be healed.” This was not merely a desperate act, but an act of faith. She did not give in to her circumstances but chose to come to Jesus.
1. Whatever your circumstances, do not despair.
Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus calls those who are tired, hurt, sick, and burdened to come to Him. This woman came without strength, without possessions, and without honor, but she came with faith. When she touched Jesus' cloak, her bleeding stopped immediately. Many people were pressing around Jesus, but only this woman received a miracle, because she touched Jesus with faith.
Jesus then said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” Jesus did not call her an unclean woman. He called her daughter. She was not only physically healed but also had her dignity restored, was accepted back, and given peace.
2. Believe firmly in the promise of God's Word.
Malachi 4:2 says that for those who fear the name of the Lord, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in His wings. The word 'wings' here is related to kanaf. When the woman touched the hem of Jesus' garment, she was believing in the Messiah who brings healing.
Psalm 91:4 says, “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.” God's Word is not empty hope. Matthew 24:35 says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.” Numbers 23:19 affirms that God is not human, that He should lie. What the Lord has spoken, He will surely fulfill.
Kanaf reminds us that under the wings of God's love there is protection, and at the hem of the Messiah's garment there is healing. Therefore, do not despair. Come to Jesus with faith. In Him there is healing, forgiveness, peace, and restoration of life.
May the Lord Jesus Bless You.
