PALM SUNDAY

Ps. Agus Gunawan

Transcript

Palm Sunday is a deeply significant moment in our faith journey. The story of Jesus entering Jerusalem, welcomed with shouts of "Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord," is not merely a historical event, but also an invitation for us to examine our hearts before God.

The crowd at that time welcomed Jesus with great joy. They waved palm branches and spread their cloaks as a sign of respect for a king. However, there was something very different about the way Jesus came. He did not ride a horse as kings generally do, but a donkey. This was not without reason. The donkey symbolizes humility and peace, showing that Jesus came not to wage war, but to bring peace between humanity and God.

Yet behind that festive praise, a sad reality was hidden. Many of them praised Jesus with wrong motives. They hoped Jesus would become a king who would free them from Roman occupation. They desired a change in their situation, not a change of heart. When their hopes were not fulfilled, in a short time, that praise turned into rejection. From “Hosanna” to "Crucify Him."

This story reminds us that praise to God should not be based on personal gain. True praise comes from a heart that loves God, not from a desire to gain something. God does not seek loud voices, but sincere hearts.

Furthermore, Palm Sunday teaches us about true worship. Worship is not about the atmosphere, music, or favorable circumstances. Worship is a posture of the heart that continues to choose God, even when circumstances are not as hoped. Mature faith is faith that continues to praise amid scarcity, continues to be grateful amid difficulties.

Moreover, the donkey ridden by Jesus also becomes a symbol of perseverance. In Christian life, what matters most is not how we start, but how we endure to the end. Many people start with great enthusiasm, but not all are able to remain faithful. Yet, true victory is given to those who continue to walk with God until the finish line.

Perhaps we feel weak, not strong enough, or not as great as others. But God does not seek the strongest or the smartest. God seeks a faithful heart. Faithfulness in small things, faithfulness in waiting, and faithfulness in every season of life are what is precious in His sight.

Ultimately, Palm Sunday invites us not just to wave “palm branches” symbolically, but to surrender our lives completely to God. May our praise be pure, our worship true, and our faith remain burning until the end.

For one day, we long to stand before God as overcomers, together glorifying Him who is the King of Peace, who gave His life for us. Amen.

May the Lord Jesus bless you
