Sermon notes
God's Word says: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law" (Galatians 5:22-23). Gentleness is not weakness; it is the mark of a heart that is strong in the Lord. Paul placed gentleness close to humility, and Jesus Himself said, "learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart" (Matthew 11:29). In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5).
Gentleness Shows in the Tongue
Gentleness is closely tied to the tongue. Not sharp and wounding words, not false words, nor words that keep finding fault in others, but speech that builds up, calms, and gives others room to grow. Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery, "go and sin no more" (John 8:11), without crushing words. A gentle person also does not go looking for conflict; he chooses peace and holds himself back.
Gentleness Grows in the House of God
"The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree... Those who are planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age" (Psalm 92:12-14). There is a process: first planted, then flourishing, then bearing fruit. We are planted in God's house through His Word, and we should not keep moving around, so that our hard mindset is slowly transformed. Without strong roots, fruit will not last.
Gentleness Is Strength
Gentleness is the eighth fruit because it is not an area of weakness but an area of strength. "And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth" (Deuteronomy 8:18). A gentle person has the strength to keep smiling through pain, the strength to rise again after falling, the strength to bear shame and people's talk, and the strength not to abuse power when lifted up.
Flexible in Every Season of Life
A gentle person is flexible. Joseph was cast aside again and again, and Moses went through three stages of life, yet they did not break. Do not break when you are in the valley, and stay humble when God lifts you to the top. If you are not strong right now, do not walk alone; come to your pastor and stay planted in the house of God.
Today, what part of your life do you need to surrender to God so that your heart stays gentle, both under pressure and when God lifts you up? Be gentle, and be strong in the process. The Lord Jesus bless you.
